Recently, while on job-site in B.C., I experienced a metal revelation. I was completing an installation of thirty bronze sculptures securing them into concrete on the ground, on walls and even six stories up a newly built condominium development.  My focus was to install the pieces securely for the safety of passers-by and to prevent theft.
In working closely with the artist of these works, I was drawn into his vision of the sculptures as he distributed them in the space in such a way as to create a composition.  He was bringing all aspects of the condominium development together.  Thirty bronze mythical creatures, a bank, condo towers, a library, a fountain, retail shops and a street meandering through the centre. This job exemplified that there is so much more to the craft than just making the object. The talent and creativity is in making the materials work together and look good. Placement, colour, interface with other materials and context are just as important.
I now understood why on my travels to near and far places, I am constantly drawn to the structures that surround me. I am always fascinated by how many ways materials are manipulated to perform tasks, whether aesthetic, structural or both.  When I see an interesting new element it’s like a new puzzle that I want to solve – who made it, how and why. These features inspire me with design ideas.
And that is why I always keep my camera handy and have been nicknamed the metal paparazzi. These photos have inspired two new sections in Metalcraft, “Recycled” and “Metalpast”.  I hope you will enjoy and look forward to seeing the many intriguing and ingenious ways that metal and metal objects have been used and reused throughout the world.
